Operating and financial review

At the end of 2008, we operated 2,897 retail locations in the United States and Europe, employed more than 200,000 people and had combined sales of EUR 25.7 billion. We have a strong balance sheet and we have repositioned our businesses over recent years to give better value to our customers.

Group performance

In 2008, we delivered a solid performance with particularly strong results in the last quarter, and achieved an underlying retail operating margin of 5.0 percent for the full year.
